Manager’s Message
We have received an overwhelmingly positive member response on our new additions to the club - Charcuterie at Parkpoint and our family-friendly changing rooms. Both added bonuses have started off strong with member usage climbing daily! Many parents are enjoying the alternative changing area for their children while they take care of their own fitness.
Summer is a busy time at Parkpoint. Our staff has been hard at work to make your summer club time productive and enjoyable. To that end, thank you for your understanding as we close early on August 14th at 3pm for our Annual Employee Appreciation Party. Special congratulations to Lauren Ahlgren for being selected as our most recent Employee of the Quarter!
The summer season has just begun! We hope you spend a lot of it with us enjoying a healthy and fun summer!

SWIM LESSONS – SESSIONS 3 AND 4 STILL AVAILABLE!
Swim lessons have been a blast so far this summer. All of the instructors are so proud of our lesson participants, as they've learned many new skills over the past few weeks. We are very excited to have both new and returning staff join us this season to teach lessons and lifeguard. Much thanks to Chanel, Nica, Gianna, and the rest of the aquatics staff for helping make the swim program better than ever.

Join Parkpoint’s Book Club for Some Extra Summer Reading!
The Parkpoint Book Club is going strong! Over the last few months we have read Unless by Carol Shields, The House on Fortune Street by Margot Livesey and The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver. Our discussions have been both thought-provoking and very interesting.
Our “Julie & Julia” evening was fun! We enjoyed the movie while sipping champagne and nibbling on deviled eggs, and homemade pate!
So no one must miss the music on the plaza concerts, for July and August we have rescheduled our meetings to the last Wednesday of every month at 6pm. Our July book choice is The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga.

The Benefits of Water Exercise by Gerry Bryan, Aqua Aerobics Instructor
So you think you are a hardcore exercise gym rat?
Think again – hardcore are water exercisers – men and women, both the young and the more seasoned. Perhaps some hardcore facts will help you understand how hardcore water people really are.
These are just a few of the benefits of taking a water exercise class to cross train with your daily workout routine. Here at Parkpoint, water classes are plentiful. Our talented and demanding water instructors teach weekday morning and afternoon classes and a Saturday morning class. Try adding a water class a couple of times a week. You will feel and see the difference with strength and endurance. These benefits will translate to your tennis game (serving and ground stroke), biking (endurance and leg muscle strength), and basketball (endurance and power). In our ever-growing, health conscious population, water exercise is definitely a way to change up your body’s needs so that it may truly last a lifetime.

This workshop introduces new students to a basic foundation of poses (asanas), breathing techniques, alignment and guided relaxation. It’s the perfect fit for those who have injuries, those just beginning their workout regime, or even those who are just curious about yoga. Even if you’ve been practicing yoga for a while, it’s a great way to reconnect with the fundamentals while getting a great workout. Learn a wide range of more intense and challenging asanas, such as inversions, backbends, and stretches. This workshop requires a spirit of adventure as well as an advanced-level of practice.

What is TRX? A great total body workout!
When exercising, we often depend on machines, bikes, treadmills and other pieces of equipment to help us get in better shape. But there is a device that uses nothing more than gravity and your muscle power to achieve a surprisingly difficult workout. That device is the TRX. TRX is a strap system used in one-on-one or TeamFit Personal Training designed for functional bodyweight exercises for strengthening and stretching. The straps support either upper or lower body for a variety of exercises. Exercises can be modified for all fitness levels from beginners to athletes and provide a fun, effective workout! New TRX Equipment!
Parkpoint is proud to announce the addition of three new TRX suspension training systems to our new TeamFit and personal training programs! This addition allows us to have individual or group coaching sessions of up to seven participants! TRX TeamFit training is a fee-based program: $22/hour and $15/half-hour for members, or $25/hour and $18/half-hour for non-members. There will be new TRX sessions starting. Watch for flyers!

Parkpoint’s Summer Camps Update
With Sessions 1 and 2 completed, we are half-way through Parkpoint’s Summer Camps and they have been a great success! Campers have enjoyed a full schedule packed with exciting crafts and activities, water games, and good times in the pool. We are looking forward to more adventures in Sessions 3 and 4. Keep an eye out for more possible additions next summer!

Come and join us for evenings full of fun and adventure! Kids will enjoy exciting activities, a fun craft, a movie, and yummy kid food! Kid’s Night Out provides an opportunity for kids to socialize in a positive and healthy environment. And of course, it has the added benefit of giving parents a night out of their own! We hope to see you there.

Congratulations Lauren Ahlgren – Employee of the Quarter!
We are pleased to announce Lauren Ahlgren as the well deserving winner of the Employee of the Quarter (April – June 2010). Having joined Parkpoint in May of 2008, Lauren started working in our Aquatics, Front Desk and Maintenance departments. She has also now transitioned into our Aquatics Assistant as well as helping coordinate our Book Club. She has proven herself to be a very dedicated worker with excellent attention to customer service and standards as well as being a fantastic team player. She is obliging, helpful and flexible with a positive attitude. Lauren has excelled in all of her new roles and responsibilities and her passion for swimming and our aquatics program have played a huge role in our recently redesigned programs. Because of her talent and dedication, the swim program and lessons have been a resounding success – organized, focused and a lot of fun. Congratulations Lauren for being recognized by members and fellow staff alike!

The Benefits of Water Exercise by Gerry Bryan, Aqua Aerobics Instructor
So you think you are a hardcore exercise gym rat?
Think again – hardcore are water exercisers – men and women, both the young and the more seasoned. Perhaps some hardcore facts will help you understand how hardcore water people really are.
- Water provides 12 times the resistance when you are moving in it than does air. Plus, the effects of gravity are reduced.
- Water surrounds the exerciser, so it affects every move in every direction.
- The compression factor or hydrostatic properties of the water are involved when the water surrounds the body helping to keep one’s heart rate and blood pressure down, causing you to work harder to elevate your heart rate to get a cardiovascular workout. Water also reduces the compression load on the spine and other joints.
- Water promotes muscle balance by providing resistance for both muscles in a muscle pair, in both directions of movement.
- Water exercisers have more maneuverability and can still do things in the water that gravity, age, weight, or physical problems, have made no longer possible on land.
- Water creates a natural metabolism booster. As you exhale, the water and heat in your body are eliminated through evaporation and so you burn calories through your breathing and sweating.
