GENERAL MANAGER'S MESSAGE

It’s a New Year! …..a fresh start, a blank page for us to work on and an exciting time. With everyone so busy and many facing difficult challenges – economic difficulty, illness, personal loss, and the lack of peace throughout the world – it can be hard to connect with the hopefulness of a new year and to get motivated.
I try to focus on what I have rather than what I don’t. I feel so fortunate have been part of the Parkpoint family for over 15 years. Everyday I get to come to a place where I am surrounded by people that I consider my friends.
So whether you are bouncing happily into 2011 or you need some extra encouragement, remember the Parkpoint family is here to help you kick start your year and your fitness goals. In a time of change and uncertainty, you can always count on a warm friendly greeting from our staff. We can also help you focus on taking care of yourself. Try a new class, schedule time with one of our experienced and motivating trainers, or just take time out to relax with a rejuvenating massage. And don’t forget to slow down and chat with friends while enjoying one of the delicious selections from the Charcuterrie.
Enjoy the New Year and know that we are here for you!

Trainer Tip – Keeping One’s New Year’s Resolutions
According to the US government, half of the most popular New Year’s resolutions are health related. Why not get started on a healthier you by making better use of the Parkpoint clubs? Mix up your workout with a new class, de-stress with a facial or massage, set up an appointment with our nutritionist, acupuncturist, or personal trainers, or even invite a friend to workout with you. Here are five tips for staying on track with your New Year’s resolutions:
- Choose one goal. Try to stick to one main goal instead of several goals. By working towards a central, yet obtainable, target, you won’t overwhelm yourself with too many expectations.
- Spread it out. Plan your year out so that your goal is divided into small steps. Set a goal for each month or every couple of weeks so the pressure to succeed is less daunting.
- Find a partner. Ask a friend or two to join you on your mission. Having the support for one another will be great motivation for when either of you have a slip-up.
- Keep track. Take account of your progress, both good and bad. Don’t beat yourself up when you fall off track. Just do your best and keep sticking to it.
- Reward yourself. It’s more than okay to enjoy your small successes! Doing this will act as great incentive for maintaining momentum with your commitment. Just remember to have the rewards be things that won’t sabotage your goal.

Eating Well in the New Year
The parties are over and the New Year begins. It is a great time to set new goals and lose weight. Most Americans gain about four pounds during the “Holiday of Eating,” Halloween through New Year’s Day. But now in a new year, 2011, most of us resolve to“ eat better and lose weight.” Here are some tips to help you succeed! First, stay away from fad diets-they don’t work and don’t starve yourself because you will end up eating more. Take one step at a time and permanent weight loss will come. Try these tips:
- Eat 3 meals and a snack daily. Or eat 6 small meals daily.
- Eat breakfast every morning.
- Eat lean protein at every meal. Protein metabolizes slowly so you stay full longer.
- Eat vegetables or fruit at every meal. Fill ½ your dinner plate with vegetables.
- Drink enough fluid. Choose water, sparkling water, and unsweetened iced green, black or herb teas. Add lemon, lime or a bit of berry juice for flavor. Enjoy a cup or two of coffee or tea with low-fat milk. Avoid sweet drinks of all kinds, including juice and sports drinks.
- Avoid processed foods made with white grains and white sugar. For a sweet tooth have a piece of dark chocolate and a few nuts. Choose chocolate with 70% or more cocoa butter.
- Benefit from red wine or other alcohol by drinking it with meals. Daily recommendation: One 5 oz glass for women and two 5 oz glasses for men.
- Take your supplements every day.
- Journal. Keep food records and lose weight.
- Exercise 5-6 days a week. Start slow…
- Join a weight loss group or start one with friends.

News Flash : Just off the wire - Comcast Changeover
As many of you are very much aware of, and frustrated by, we have had reception issues with the televisions on the fitness floor since the changeover to digital-only broadcasting earlier this year. Our service provider’s temporary fix was to utilize digital switching boxes on each piece of equipment, which has proven to be problematic to say the least. At this point, our service provider has updated the junction serving our building and offered to build a special box which will take all of the switching boxes away and return the fitness floor televisions to their original configuration. We plan to have the project completed by March 1, 2011. We do want to take the opportunity to say thank you for your patience during the transition to better service.
