Member Spotlight: Jack Doss

Jack Doss is an inspiration.  A retired firefighter, Jack has a host of accomplishments and stories, but his most recent source of pride comes from his incredible recovery from shoulder replacement surgery.  That’s right: shoulder replacement.  Recovering from such a serious procedure is no easy task, but Jack says he is now in even better physical condition than he was pre-op.  So, how did he do it?  With hard work and determination of course, but also with the support of many including the Parkpoint community.

Jack joined Parkpoint about a year ago on the recommendation of his physical therapist.  While he’d been doing well with his recovery, he felt he could still do more to help his shoulder and the rest of his body get back into shape.  Jack’s main goals were to be pain-free and avoid needing to return for more surgery, so it was important for him to go about it the right way.  With this in mind, Jack began training with Ed Mount.  Ed carefully assessed Jack’s needs and put together a fitness plan that would allow Jack to not only reach his goals, but exceed them.

Ed started Jack on a 30-day cycle that allowed him to monitor Jack’s progress, while continuing to challenge him.  Every facet of Jack’s fitness plan, from strength training to cardio, was tailored to keep his shoulder on the right track.  Jack’s greatest fear during this process was over-doing it, causing greater injury.  However, he says that Ed held his hand the whole way and was always there to keep an eye on him.  Sticking to the fitness plan and slowly building up his strength allowed Jack to speed up his recovery while letting his shoulder heal the way it needed to.

The results amazed Jack, his surgeon, and his physical therapist.  Jack says he is now pain-free and enjoying a much greater range of motion in his shoulder than before.  Golf, household chores, and other activities that would have previously caused him great pain are now possible.  And while Jack accomplished his original goals, he still meets with Ed to check in and ensure that he stays on track.

Jack’s success is truly incredible, but not uncommon.  When asked what message he wanted to convey to others by sharing his story, he said that no one should be afraid to do what they need to do to help them reach their goals.  Surgeries and injuries are all surmountable if you reach out and use the support available to you.  Ed is just one of many trainers and instructors at Parkpoint who want to help us all be at our best.

Thank you for inspiring us Jack!
