Sonya McVay
Sonya discovered the mind, body and spirit connection when she was "hired" in a small village in Romania called Tecuci during college to work with severely disabled children and youth that had been rescued. Some of the children had not been born handicapped but through lack of touch through their infancy, their bodies were no longer fully functioning. A physical therapist would come to visit the children and without equipment would diagnose the children and work with them. After the visits, the children who mostly sat and cried were happy and would laugh even if they couldn’t speak. All the physical therapist seemed to do was intuitively touch and move the children’s limbs from side to side. It was from this experience that Sonya became interested with the world of movement. Shortly after Sonya arrived home, a friend brought her to a Pilates class. The changes that she felt and saw in her own body and spirit reminded her of those moments in Tecuci watching children being given relief. Within months she was Pilates Method Alliance certified and has continued her practice and schooling over the last four years at Tone Studio. She believes that Pilates brings health not just to your physical body, but to a person’s being as a whole. She believes that a healthy life stems from a healthy relationship with one’s body. |
