Manager’s Message
It’s hard to believe that we’re already into the third month of the year and that spring is right around the corner. We started off the year with a great start, which can only be attributed to our loyal members and hardworking staff! Not only is the club off to a strong start this year, but we’ve also made some changes and additions based on member feedback that have received an overwhelmingly positive response. If you haven’t noticed them already, here is a summary of some of them so far:
- New carpet in the women’s locker room
- Two new Cardio Machines on the Fitness Floor
- Three new Strength and Conditioning Machines on the Fitness Floor
- Improved storage and organization in the Group Exercise Equipment Storage Area
- Soon to come – a larger bike rack in a new location!
Here are a few reminders to help make everyone’s club experience enjoyable during the busy season:
- Please park in the designated club parking spaces (see map available at the Front Desk) and do not park in the spaces directly in front of the businesses that share our parking lot (the businesses have parking spaces that are designated for their use only).
- Please remember to use your membership cards to help make the check-in process fast and easy. Bringing your membership card will also ensure that your visits will be tracked for our You. Fit. Rewards program.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation during this busy time of year!

Trainer’s Tip
Dahdri McCormick
It's the New Year and the fitness floor is still rocking! Here are some simple fitness floor etiquette rules that will help us all maintain a standard of care for the fitness floor and everyone will enjoy their workouts more!
Put things back where you found them! Isn't it frustrating to go look for a ball or a mat and somehow it has gravitated across the fitness floor? If you use something at Point A, don't put it back at Point B. Everything has a designated space, so be thoughtful to return things where they belong!
If you wet it, wipe it! Gym wipes and towels are available to wipe down machines/equipment throughout the facility.
Share! Share! Share! Be courteous and share the exercise equipment. Cardio machines have a 30-minute time limit.
Ask the question, "Do you mind if I work in with you?" There is nothing wrong with hopping off the machine you're using and letting someone else go in between your sets. Most everyone is friendly, just like you, and will be more than accommodating.

Have you seen the new equipment?
We have some exciting new equipment on the fitness floor. The new
Precor AMT is an elliptical trainer that operates in three different modes; stepping, elliptical and long strides (to mimic running). There are 2 of these new cardio machines. Please ask a trainer or fitness floor staff to show you how to operate these machines if you are unsure.
Seated Plate-Loaded Calf Raise This is a new seated calf raise - different than the Technogym. You can use weighted plates to increase and decrease the load for the lower leg and it enables greater stretch through the use of your own body weight.
Standing Glute This is an outstanding glute and quad machine that allows you to work each leg independently in an upright position. It is functional, safe and not intimidating.
Chin/Dip/Leg Raise (Roman Chair)
Three body weight exercises in one! Pull-ups, Dips and Abdominal work.
We hope you enjoy these new pieces! You may see some duplicate or older pieces of equipment go away. Please know that we are trying to accommodate room for all the new equipment and we will offer you the newest and safest pieces of equipment available. Again, do not hesitate to ask a fitness staff or personal trainer for any assistance with the new equipment!

The Family that Cooks Together...
What better way to teach the benefits of healthy eating than by making your kids part of the meal making!
Here are seven fun and nutritional food activities for the whole family:
- Post a pyramid. Post a copy of the Food Guide Pyramid on your refrigerator, and invite kids to help plan family meals that include the recommended servings from each of the food groups. This way they'll learn how to make sound nutritional choices and eat a balanced diet.
- Encourage kids to participate. Every recipe has some type of valuable task a child can do, even if it's simply rinsing lettuce or cracking an egg. Let children do real work like scraping carrots, measuring ingredients, or whatever jobs they can perform safely at their age. Giving children a task shows them that food preparation is important. In addition, those who may be reluctant to eat vegetables or other foods might be less squeamish if they've had a hand in preparing them.
- Have a cultural food night. Together with your kids, plan and make a meal from another country, such as Mexico, Italy, or Japan. Bring out a globe or look at a picture of the country and its people, and discuss how the geography and climate determine the types of food people eat and the ingredients they use.
- Talk and read! Toddlers can learn simply by watching and listening. Give them measuring spoons or some plastic utensils to play with while you talk to them about what you're doing. Ask school-age kids to read a simple recipe out loud. This way, everyone knows what the recipe requires, and kids can practice their reading skills. After your child reads through the recipe, decide which tasks each child (and adult) will perform.
- Divide or double recipes. When you cut a recipe in half or double it, you use essential math skills, such as division and multiplication. Pick simple recipes that are easy to halve or double, like soups and sauces. (Avoid baked goods like cookies and cakes, since they often don't turn out well when ingredients are altered.)
- Shop with kids. Instead of simply dragging children along to the market, involve them in the shopping process. Ask children to weigh produce, so they can learn about weights and measures. Let kids practice math skills by counting out the money at the register. When kids help pick out foods to cook, they tend to eat them more readily. Let them choose a new healthy food to try each week, such as a fruit, vegetable, cheese, or bread (not a new cookie or candy!).
- Be inventive. Think of creative ways to use your kitchen as a classroom. For instance, play the spice cabinet ABCs (A is for allspice, B is for basil, C is for curry, etc.). Explain how to set the table using a clock drawn on a paper plate (glasses go at the 2:00 position, forks are placed at 9:00, and so on). In one family I know, parents pick the main course and offer their kids a menu of side dishes (usually leftovers). The kids order from the menu and pay for the meal with play money. Not only do the kids think this is oodles of fun, but they also eagerly eat their meal while their parents find a welcome audience for leftovers!

Dahly McCormick
Dahly is going to Malawi, Africa to build houses for Habitat for Humanity!
Dahly started working in our Childcare department in 2009 and has been a great addition to the staff. As a student at Ursuline High School, Dahly is involved in the Community Based Service Learning (CBSL) program in which she must actively take part in the community through service work over the course of her senior year. For her Senior Service Project this year, she has been working with Habitat for Humanity helping to build homes for low-income families in Healdsburg and Sebastopol. She has been volunteering with Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County for over three years. In December she applied to Habitat’s Global Village program, which allows volunteers to travel internationally to build homes and was accepted on a trip to Malawi, Africa from April 9th – 22nd. On the trip she will work with a team of individuals from all over the United States and Canada to build in Area 49, a village outside of the capital city of Lilongwe. She is looking forward to exploring a new culture and serving Habitat’s mission of eliminating poverty and homelessness.
Nearly 2 billion people around the world live in slum housing and over 100 million are homeless. Habitat for Humanity helps eliminate poverty by providing simple, decent shelter to those in need.
Bill and Lindy Buchanan, owners of Parkpoint, are long time supporters of Habitat for Humanity and actively participate in the programs and have gone on several Habitat trips to help build houses.
Dahly is fundraising to help pay for her trip to Malawi as well as working hard to fundraise for additional income that will go directly to Habitat for Humanity. If you would like to make a donation to help support Dahly as well as Habitat for Humanity, please contact Heidi Desmond, Club Manager, at heidi@parkpointhealthclub.com or 385-2500.
Thank you for your support and we wish Dahly all the best on her adventure in Malawi!
