Manager’s MessageEllie

Dear Members,

Fall is just around the corner, but it’s not too late to enjoy the last 'dog days' of summer here in our beautiful Sonoma Valley.

Don’t forget, the Member Party is just a few weeks away. If you haven't signed up, it's not too late to join us at Jacuzzi Winery for an amazing meal, wine, hors d'oeuvres, dancing to the live band, 'Time Bandits' and enjoying the fresh sweet night time summer stars and breeze with your Parkpoint friends. And don’t forget the party this year is open to your personal guests too!

What else is there to do during these lazy, late summer days? It's a perfect time to catch the last of all the wonderful fresh fruit and vegetables at our local Farmer's Markets. The Tuesday night Market (located in the Sonoma Plaza) will run through the last Tuesday in October, but the Friday morning market is run year-round from 9:00am until noon at the Depot Park.
Veg
There are also two new Saturday Sonoma Farmer's Markets to supplement our fresh, healthy eating habits. In addition to the Farmer's Market held on Saturday mornings from 9:00am to 1:00pm at the Sonoma Community Center on East Napa, Sonoma now has a second Saturday Harvest Market at Sonoma Garden Park on 7th Street East. This market is open Saturdays from 8:00am to Noon. Enjoy the Fall Harvest!

Time is wasting as the days get shorter, so why not check out the free walking program offered by Sonoma County, at www.iwalksonoma.org. iWALK is a program to promote walking throughout the county. It is for everyone who lives or works in Sonoma County. The program offers starter kits for individual walkers, walking groups, worksite walking programs and more. iWALK is free and easy to do – just put on a comfortable pair of walking shoes and start walking!
Also associated with iWALK, is iGROW, which is all about growing, eating, and sharing healthy food. This website will help you find:iWalk
Enjoy these last few lingering summer days and I hope to see you at one of our great Farmer's Market. And don’t forget, to join us and celebrate our 21st Birthday Party!

Saluta,
Ellie

TRAINER’S TIP

Hydrate To Stay On Top Of Your GameTrainer
Barbara Bailey, Personal Trainer
Enjoy the harvest season, eat, drink and be merry! As you venture into the fall to enjoy more temperate outdoor activities, be sure to remain hydrated. Plan each workout and any exercise with fuel and water for the body. Sports drinks provide electrolytes and water to replace salt and balance sodium and potassium. Muscle cramps, feeling light-headed, lack of focus, or headache, are all initial signs of dehydration. Before you exercise, even the day before, be sure to consume more fluids with a composition of water, carbohydrates and sodium.
Did you know cool water is absorbed the fastest? The National Athletic Trainer’s Association recommends drinking 17 to 20 ounces of fluid 2 to 3 hours ahead of a work out and then 7-10 ounces 10 to 20 minutes prior to exercise. Depending on your body weight and perspiration, continue with 6-10 ounces fluids every 15 to 20 minutes. Cheers!

Swim Lesson Wrap-UpPool
As summer draws to a close, we at Parkpoint have to wrap up our summer swim lessons for children.  Our swim instructors: Samantha, Angela, Danny and Laurie would like to bid everyone a fond adieu and look forward to seeing everyone next summer.  They report that there was much fun and learning that was accomplished over the course of the three swim sessions.  The jellyfish group which included parents and tots developed a feel for the water through group play, while the clownfish group and the shark group practiced swimming skills both in and out of the water.  First by learning coordination of limbs through doing the swim march around the pool on the deck and then by practicing floating, gliding, kicking, arm strokes and breathing all the children progressed in their swimming abilities and learned how much fun swimming can be.

WEIGHT WATCHERSfodor

Stop trying to heal a bad situation with food and learn some coping tactics from Weight Watchers!

Would you ever use a cookie to bandage a cut or scrape? Of course not.  The idea of trying to heal a physical wound with food makes no sense! Now ask yourself: Have you ever used food to try to heal an emotional cut or scrape?

The answer is probably yes. Many people try to "heal" an uncomfortable situation or emotion (e.g., stress, sadness, anxiety, boredom) with food. But just like slapping a cookie on a scrape isn't going to heal the wound, eating that cookie isn't going to "heal" boredom, sadness, or stress. True, a cookie may initially fill a void; but in the long run, eating a cookie to make yourself happy is just as ridiculous as using chocolate chips for bandages!

Get positive

Behind every behavior – even negative ones – is a positive intention. When you use food as a bandage for an emotional wound, you're seeking out a positive feeling. That feeling might be comfort, relaxation, happiness or entertainment. But whatever it is, you're eating in the hopes of achieving a positive state of mind.

Think about the negative feelings that have caused you to use food as a bandage in the past. What positive feelings were you hoping to achieve by eating? Now try to imagine reframing these positive emotions with positive activities, rather than framing them with food.

For example, what could make you feel less stressed, happier, more relaxed? Maybe you could frame these emotions with a call to a friend, a long walk, a good book, or a hot bath - or by making an appointment with a Parkpoint Personal Trainer? How many non-calorie activities can you come up with to help you heal an uncomfortable emotion? Be creative! After all, a cookie lasts as long as it takes to chew it, but your objective in achieving a healthy lifestyle is to make it last a lifetime.

Weight Watchers is now in our 20th series at Parkpoint Club. Come join us any time! This series ends at the end of the year - perfect time for those holiday temptations!

Jim SparksSparky’s Conversational Antiques
Member since 7/20/2007

Jim Sparks has always enjoyed antiques and learning the stories behind them. “Most antique dealers start out as collectors then they run out of room and become antique dealers,” Jim shared. He started with a collection of small figural goats and throughout the past 50 years has since grown into a “herd” of over 500 goats! Jim enlightens us with this thought: “I believe whatever you decide to collect should bring happiness into your life. I have always enjoyed the search for just one more different goat.”

Jim’s business is Sparky’s Conversational Antiques. A woman who once entered his shop asked, “What is a ‘conversational’ antique?” Jim replied, “it is something so nice you want to share it with all of your friends, but it's not so valuable that you are afraid to.”

Jim stays fit through regular workouts that keep him strong and injury-free. “Parkpoint’s friendly, caring and helpful trainers make it such a pleasure to exercise. Ed gives so much of himself and is very encouraging. He has created an exercise program for my troublesome knee that has greatly improved its condition. Other trainers are quick to correct my form and give me tips to improve my workouts. The maintenance staff does an excellent job at keeping the club clean.”

So what’s next with the figural goat collection? Real goats! Hilda, Hyde and Honey are now part of Jim’s collection. He encourages you to bring your kids to meet his kids. Jim can be reached at 707-477-6603.
