Sweat The Little Things – Stabilizer Muscles
Most people know the big muscles in the body that help us complete our favorite exercises. Our pectorals, triceps, and deltoids help us with pushing exercises, while our biceps, lats, and trapezius muscles help us with pulling exercises. These muscles are just some of our primary movers that we use to complete an exercise. Our little stabilizer muscles, on the other hand, are less commonly known but equally important. These muscles help stabilize joints to prevent damage while movement is occurring.
Stabilizer muscles have a number of roles; they support the trunk, limit movement in a joint, and control balance. All of these functions are crucial in preventing injury. The shoulder, hip, and trunk are 3 locations where stabilizer muscles play a huge role. All of these sites have high mobility and range of motion, which allow us to complete dynamic movements. This high mobility leads to an innately unstable joint. So why develop stabilizer muscles? In the weight room these muscles allow us to complete exercises safely and in many cases more powerfully. Outside of the weight room these muscles help in everyday activities that require the body to balance and steady itself, like picking up a sack of groceries or walking up steps. Ask your trainer about developing your stabilizer muscles.

JUNIOR CLUB SPOTLIGHT
Two Thumbs Up for Jr. Club!
By Anne Marie Sebastiani
I think one of the untapped resources Parkpoint offers is its fabulous Jr. Club (childcare) service. I initially tapped into this gem back when my twins were just 3 months old. I knew in order to keep my sanity in check I needed to carve out time for exercise, so I set up a couple hours of Jr. Club.
At first, it did feel a little strange to hand off my lil’ ones to an unfamiliar person, in a room full of unfamiliar faces, just so I could get on a treadmill. But I am SO glad I did! Petra and all of the helpers were so attentive and helpful, and setting that block of exercise/me time was a saving grace for me back then, and still is today.
My kids are almost 4 now (did I just type that? yikes!) and have pre-school which gives me a little more time for fitness. But I still definitely rely on Jr. Club weekly, and the best part is, they love it! They create more crafts and projects with Petra than at their own preschool!
So to all the families out there on the fence about taking time for yourself at the club and utilizing Jr. Club, I say definitely take advantage of this service and give it a try. Please ask me any questions too if you see me around the gym, and hopefully I’ll see or meet you dropping off or picking up your lil’ ones at Jr. Club!

Member Bill Wesch Plays On Hawaiian Softball Team
In the fall of 2006 Bill Wesch had no idea he would again be on a competitive softball team after being away from the sport for 25 years. Last August Bill and his wife Karen traveled with their team to Hawaii to compete in the state championships. Even though his team did not win Bill describes it as a great learning experience.
In 2006 Bill and some other players were having dinner when the idea of forming a team came up. “Karen pushed me into it. She is our biggest supporter and cheerleader,” says Bill.
Bill credits the trainers at Parkpoint with helping him work through some issues with his knees, enabling him to play the game that uses a 14-inch ball. “Your old glove designed for a ten inch ball doesn’t work too well,” says Bill.
The league is for
players 60 years and older. The diamond is set up to eliminate collisions between runners and basemen. The oldest player on Bill’s team is 71, although he has seen an 82- year-old short stop. “That guy still had all the moves”, Bill says.
After three years of playing Bill has started his fourth season. We wish him the best and another shot at the tournament in August 2010.
Greg Lewis Takes US Power Federation Bench Press Championship
In September you read about Greg’s success in breaking the world bench press record and he was preparing to hold the title in a competition in Las Vegas in November. Greg is back from the US Power Federation Championship and broke his previous record of bench pressing 407 pounds in his weight and age group. Greg set the new world record of 424 pounds! This is also a personal record for Greg. Congratulations, Greg!
Tim Tracy Shoots Hole-In-One At Sonoma Country Club
This news comes a little late but it must be recognized! Our very own Tim Tracy shot a hole-in one last August (yes, this is late news!), something only a handful of professionals have ever done. Tim achieved his hole-in-one on the 192-yard 7th hole with his 5 iron. Yes, 192 yards! We’re very proud of you, Tim!
