Down to Specifics...
It is well known that resistance training is just as important as cardiovascular conditioning for good health and weight loss. There is specific data to support why combining these two elements of training will help your weight loss and fitness goals. To say building muscle increases your metabolism is very vague. As a personal trainer, I help people meet their goals and understand why those goals need to be specific: to want to lose weight is very vague. A specific goal sounds more like this: I want to complete a walk/run event in 2 months, or I want to be in a healthy body fat percentage, or I am working on lowering my cholesterol levels. Specific goals can be measured and quantified by the achievement. Without setting specific goals, you may find you are not gaining much with all the time and energy spent in the gym.
Here are more specifics to understanding exercise and weight loss and how they affect your goals.
- You need to expend 3,500 calories to burn off 1 pound of fat. This is why counting your calorie intake is so important.
- One pound of muscle burns 50 calories. If you increase your lean muscle mass by 1 pound, you can increase your calorie use by 50 calories.
It is safe to say that if you incorporate resistance training into your exercise program you could increase your lean muscle mass by 10 pounds in about 8 months. You could be burning 500 calories more per day or 3,500 calories per week, which equals 1 pound of fat burned in 1 week (regardless of your activity level that week).
3,500 calories = 1 lb (remember, this is to lose as well as gain weight)
50 calories = the calorie use of 1 lb of lean muscle
10 lbs of muscle = 500 calories burned
500 calories per day x 7 days per week = 3,500 calories
3,500 calories burned is 1 lb of fat weight lost regardless of activity.
So remember this when you know you will be unavailable to come to the gym. Even the most committed fitness routines will have inactive periods such as vacations, holidays, injuries, family / friend visits or illnesses like flu / colds. It can make the difference between getting back to the gym beating back the weight you gained during your absence and getting back without an increase in fat weight.
So in conclusion, build up muscle now and save up for later. Besides, your body needs it, likes it and your health demands it.

Member & Staff Superstars
Last year Mickey Zimmerman (Parkpoint member since 2002) was the lucky recipient of four 1-hour personal training sessions with Ed Mount through the Relay For Life Raffle. Upon winning this prize he was determined to take charge of his health. He no longer relies on any medications and as a bonus has lost weight!
In 2009 Mickey participated in an Avon 3-day breast cancer walk. Mickey is a breast cancer survivor. Breast cancer in men is rare. The odds, Mickey explains, “are like winning the lottery in reverse. Being a man with breast cancer can be a lonely experience. There are few support groups for men. When I attended women’s groups, some of them were uncomfortable with me there, and I didn’t feel right making one person uncomfortable.” Mickey met another male in San Diego who became his support group and they emailed back and forth. “Being a man with breast cancer, I have been called upon to speak within the cancer community.”
Since that walk last year Mickey set a goal for himself to participate in two walks in 2010, one 2-day 39-mile and one 3-day 60 mile walk. “I am in the best shape of my life, all thanks to working with Ed (Mount),” beamed Mickey in a recent conversation. To stay healthy and off medications, Mickey has to work at it just like the rest of us. He comes to the club at least three times a week and golfs regularly. He also goes in for annual mammograms. Mickey’s own mother had breast cancer and Mickey has completed genetic testing to know the likelihood of his 22-year old son getting the disease.
Members who would like to support Mickey with his walk can make donations in envelopes he will leave in the lobby. His goal is to raise about $4,000 dollars.
Parkpoint wishes you continued success in your training, Mickey, and in your upcoming walks!
