Manager’s Message
Dear Members,
It is indisputable that our health is determined by the lifestyle choices we make: the correlation between heart disease and cardiovascular exercise, strength training and osteoporosis, diet and exercise and diabetes, and stress and depression is now common knowledge and supported by countless medical studies. Without a doubt, we have the power to positively affect our health through exercise, diet, and monitoring our stress levels!
Those of us in the over-fifty crowd dedicated to staying healthy are experiencing the additional challenges of maintaining our fitness level as we age. Our
Fitness Director, Lana Pacheco, is tackling this subject in a free
Fitness Forum seminar series entitled
Fit Over Fifty! Her first presentation on the general effects of aging on the body, was well received with over 30 members present. Due to this response,
Fit Over Fifty! Part I will be repeated this month and then followed by two additional seminars:
Fit Over Fifty Part II will focus on muscle myths and
Part III will address cardiovascular fitness as we age.
We hope you’ll join Lana for these informative sessions – bring your questions and concerns as she’ll open the floor for a Q and A period. Please let us know what health and fitness subjects you would be interested in hearing about in the future. Parkpoint is here to support you in cultivating a healthy lifestyle – mind, body, and spirit!
To Your Health,
Nancy

TRAINER’S TIP:
Sports Specific Training
by Lana
Why when I exercise regularly is it hard for me to walk around Spring Lake?
Have you noticed that you can be working regularly in the gym and then be challenged on a hike, bike or swim? The reason is the Law of Specificity – essentially, your body uses motor neuron pathways and recruits muscle fiber based on learned and remembered movement patterns. You can be a great swimmer because you swim regularly, but you won’t do well going for an occasional run and vice versa.
Sports specific training consists of practicing those movement patterns that are part of your sport. Basically, your body needs to rehearse. There are many ways that you can practice sports specific movements in the gym. For example, you can use the torso rotation machine for sports that require throwing or swinging. Trainers will often use their expertise to create exercises that mimic the movement patterns of certain sports. If you really want to excel in a certain sport, it is wise to ask a trainer for guidance.
Some sports organizations even have training tips and ideas to help prepare newcomers for a more successful start. If you have that information, bring it to the gym and let a trainer fine tune the exercises to fit your abilities and develop challenging progressions. Believe it or not, if skiing is your sport, now is the time to start preparing for an awesome injury free ski season. Let us help – you’ll be glad you did!
See you on the Fitness Floor,
Lana
