Manager’s Message

Dear Members,
Happy New Year!
Thank you for your generosity!
I love to acknowledge our successes in the past year as we begin the new. Your participation in our FIT ‘n FUNdraiser, as well as your support for our Worth Our Weight (WOW) fundraiser, was an inspiration. Both of these events are near and dear to my heart. They demonstrate your strong commitment to not just your own health and well-being, but to supporting the well-being of our community.
For those of you that don’t know, Parkpoint donated $1 for every workout in the month of November for all the Fit ‘n Fundraiser participants. We had 197 members participating – the largest group ever! Through your efforts and energy Parkpoint was proud to donate $3,000 to the three top nominated charities: Redwood Empire Food Bank, the Humane Society, and the American Cancer Society!
Additionally, our Holiday Soiree was a fundraiser for WOW this year, a culinary school for at-risk youth in Santa Rosa. This was another impressive success with over $3,500 raised through wine and silent auction sales. My heartfelt thanks go out to all of the generous members who donated their art, wine, and services to the silent auction as well as to those who participated in the auction. Thanks to you, Evelyn and the staff at WOW have additional funding to begin their good work in 2011.
The spirit of community giving provides us with a meaningful context that we all need in our lives. You demonstrated that your health and well-being extend beyond your daily workouts and is interdependent with the health and well-being of our entire community. We thank you all for your participation. It is my hope that this will set a tone and focus to bring you, and those you love, a happy and fulfilling New Year!
To your health and well-being,
Nancy Coughlan
Club Manager

Trainer’s Tip –

How to Make Exercise a Habit
Lana Pacheco
Did you keep your “New Year” get fit resolution last year? Were you able to try one new activity in the year? Did you lose those extra pounds and keep them off? Did you stick with a workout plan? I hope so. If not, don’t worry. I am not going to make you feel guilty about it. But, I am going to give you some tips on how you can make exercise a habit this year.
Here are Three Beginning Tips to follow:
- Schedule your workout. Yes, actually make an appointment with yourself to workout! Put it in on your calendar. Making an appointment with yourself says that your health and wellness are a priority. Don’t cheat or cut yourself short here, add travel and changing time.
- Make your workouts time efficient. There are many types of training and many ways to incorporate a full-body program into a thirty minute routine. Trainers today focus on complex multi-joint movements that incorporate more muscle groups in fewer overall exercises. So you can workout as many muscle groups but in a shorter time. Ask a trainer for pointers.
- Do something different. Keep things fresh by asking a trainer for one new exercise a month. Yes, you can ask a trainer on the fitness floor for one new exercise a month. You pick the body part and they will give you a new exercise for that body part.
Pick any one of the tips above and act on it today! Make exercise a habit.
Four More Tips for Success:
- Start coming to the gym at least three days a week. Motivate yourself with a long-term goal like a triathlon, a race, or a fundraising event. Make sure it is something you love to do: run, cycle, dance, hike, walk.
- Sign up for the Shades of Glory program and do as many workouts on the card that you can do. Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t do every activity on the card.
- Attend one of James Burke’ free Nutrition Shorts to get some healthy tips on what works and doesn’t work in you daily diet.
- Sign up for a TeamFit training series and get expert Personal Training advice in a group setting. There will be several offered throughout the year.
And don’t forget - ask a Trainer for help if you are unsure how to do an exercise or if you just want something new to spice it up. We are here to help.
Happy New Year 2011!
