Manager’s MessageEllie

We are proud to acknowledge two of our employees who have received the highest accolades from their co-workers and from the members. Both Nina Schielein and Jessica Greenwood tied for the honor of Employee of the Quarter. This was no easy task as our staff keeps raising the bar with customer service and job performance. With the help of the management team, including Kim, Mike, Jim, Stephanie and Alex, almost everyone is performing the ‘A-Team’ standard.

Congratulations to Jessica and Nina for their excellent service to the members and to the Club.

Nina has been with Parkpoint for 1+ years and has been a wonderful role model and trainer for newbies on the front desk. Her Circuit Spin classes are so popular with the members that the reservations are filled in 3 – 5 minutes! *A-Team Member*

Jessica also wears 2 hats at the club, working the Fitness Floor (fitness assessments/personal training) and helping members de-stress with a relaxing well-tuned massage. Jessica has been with us for 1½ years and has also become a *A-Team Member*

Thank you both for your dedication, hard work and great attitudes at having fun at work!

Employee of the Quarter

Jessica and NinaWe had two winners this time for our Employee of the Quarter: Jessica Greenwood, Personal Trainer and Masseuse, and Nina Schielein, who also does double duty as Front Desk greeter and Spin Instructor. Comments from members and staff about both ladies are always positive and upbeat. "Nina is total customer service." "Jessica's friendly face and approachability are a real asset to the club."

JessicaJessica says she has always felt welcome at Parkpoint, even as a member before she joined our team as a personal trainer. "The variety of physical abilities and healthy mindsets here has really brought out my 'A' game when designing programs. The opportunity to work with some fantastic fellow trainers has increased my knowledge and expertise."

Nina"I enjoy my job at Parkpoint," says Nina, "because I enjoy engaging our members and getting to know them, their preferences and trying to anticipate their needs before they ask. I know most on a first name basis, and hold dear the friendships I've gained through showing a personal interest in them."

Spinning Enthusiast Finds Many Benefits From Cycling
John Gurney, Parkpoint Member Since 1994

John Gurney was once an avid runner. He ran with a group of members on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, but because of knee problems and minor surgeries his knees didn’t like to run anymore! John began attending indoor cycling classes and found that he liked the music, the instruction, the exertion, and noticed the indoor training carried into road riding cardio endurance and overall greater strength. “What doesn’t translate well from studio to road cycling,” John shared, “is technique - knowing how to manipulate gears, and general awareness of your surroundings required to be a safe road rider.” John enjoyed the spin classes so much that, like many of us, he started to overload on them, attending classes 5 times a week. “Some of us hard-core indoor cyclists will do back-to-back classes,” John confessed. So when he cut back on every day classes he noticed the road riding helped combat the fatigue he felt by the end of the week of spinning every morning. He also incorporated swimming to allow his cycling muscles to recover.

This Spring John participated in the Tour de Parkpoint, three road rides with Team NorCal (Red Peloton). These rides offered an opportunity for members to ride with skilled and experienced amateurs from the NorCal Cycling Club. Their rides began at the three club locations and were open to riders of various experience and skill level. “The first couple of rides had about 20 participants, half amateurs and half club members. NorCal held a workshop prior to the three rides to go over basic technique,” John said. Although he wasn’t able to attend the workshop he was encouraged by the fact that it was offered and hopes the “Tour” continues in the future. There were rides in March, April and May and the weather cooperated given all the rainy days during those months. Many of the roads were familiar but they also covered new terrain. “From Sonoma to Healdsburg we rode back through Spring Lake, over the dam, which provided new exposure to routes and the area. From Santa Rosa to Sonoma we encountered some traffic, but we tried to tighten it up, formed up and once out of downtown there was less traffic. Warm Springs Road required more attention to road hazards. It was a real benefit to ride with the amateurs to learn hand signals and other methods of communicate and safely ride together as a group.”

As if this wasn’t enough, John and his wife Phyllis earned their indoor cycling coach credentials and are now substitute cycling instructors at Parkpoint! On a recent business trip to Texas John had an opportunity to attend a cycling class. “Obviously I enjoy doing this quite a bit. I’ve taken many spin classes outside of Parkpoint as well. I just want to say that Parkpoint members have great cycling instructors who provide quality programs compared to many classes elsewhere. Members should check out Parkpoint indoor cycling offerings.” Awwwww…!

Thank you for sharing your story, John. We all are inspired by your enthusiasm and who knows – we might jump in the saddle and join you!!

If you’d like to share your story, please contact Jill in the Office.

WEIGHT WATCHERSWW
Are You Being Honest With Yourself About Weight Loss?

What lies are you telling yourself as you travel the path of weight loss? Maybe more than you realize. Isn't it time to get honest? Those untruths may be standing in the way of reaching your goals. Here are the most common myths that undermine a healthy approach to weight loss — and tips to overcome them to help you achieve success.

1. I need to go on a "diet."

The whole concept of a "diet" sets us up to think that we will be "on a diet," then 'off a diet." Instead, think of your weight-loss plan as a lifestyle commitment to healthy eating and exercise, for the long haul.

2. I'll get back on track on Monday...or when the sun comes out...or after the upcoming holiday...OR?

There's no day like today. If you slip, just pick up where you left off. Persistence works wonders.

3. My problems will be solved when I lose weight.

Dropping pounds may leave you feeling healthier and happier, but it won't make you more lovable or turn you into a runway model. Be clear about why you want to lose weight, and set realistic goals. It's far more motivating to strive toward being and feeling fit and energetic than simply to strive toward being a smaller size!

4. Heavy people don't deserve to eat.

Do you forgo the pizza because you're afraid people will think you shouldn't be eating? Seeing ourselves/talking to ourselves in a harsh, critical manner is a surefire way to blow any weight-loss plan! Instead, it's more effective to focus on developing a more accepting relationship with our bodies. A study published in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine (Winter 1998) found that those of us who start out accepting our bodies are more than twice as likely to lose weight than those of us who feel dissatisfied or ashamed.

5. I shouldn't wear a bathing suit (shorts, a tank top) until I've lost all the weight.

People of all different sizes and shapes enjoy sexy clothes. "When you love yourself, you start enjoying life," says Mandel. Break big goals into smaller ones, and reward yourself along the way. Rather than saying, "I need to lose 25 pounds," say, "I'll buy a new swimsuit, one size smaller."

6. The less I eat, the faster I'll lose

Wrong! The less we eat, the slower our metabolism gets, and the slower we lose the weight. Deprivation also makes us unhappy and actually causes us to overeat and overindulge. Increasing your caloric restriction in reasonable amounts can increase weight loss, but cutting back to an unrealistic intake will likely backfire. A slow and steady approach — including treating yourself to your favorite foods, in moderation — is your best bet for building a healthy relationship with food and reaching your long-term goals.

So stop telling yourself lies that sabotage your efforts. Instead, start living your life with a weight-loss plan that works for you. You'll feel better about yourself, your confidence will grow, and you'll keep the weight off.
