Cortisol can be helpful, releasing a quick burst of glucose into your system so that you can either fight or run. However, when cortisol sticks around beyond its need, your body pays the price.

When you are constantly stressed out, cortisol levels rise. Other practices contribute to high cortisol levels: starting the day with massive amounts of coffee, and ending the day with a large glass of red wine. If you think of cortisol as an obnoxious party guest, the coffee invites cortisol in and the wine gets it to stay.

Ready for bad news? The fat cells around our bellies contain four times more cortisol receptors than other cells. So guess where that excess cortisol goes? Yup. Right to the middle.
